For a fourth consecutive year, School Nutrition's Ruby Reader packed her bags and headed off on the road to visit with SN readers, their colleagues, students, families and friends.

  • Darlene Hopp, Child Nutrition Manager at North Lincoln Middle School in Lincoln County, N.C., invited Ruby to her kitchen over Thanksgiving. There, Ruby assisted in the preparation of a delicious Thanksgiving meal!
  • How thoughtful! Ruby visited Pinehurst Elementary School to assist Jeanie Smith, Food Service Employee in Kellogg Joint District, Idaho, with the collection of 250 milk cartons for the local library 
  • Celebrities abound at Winona Middle School in La Crescent, Minn., where Ruby attended the annual Holiday Chapter Meeting alongside Kari Blum, Cook; Dr. Dr. Katie Wilson, SNA National President 2008-2009; and Executive Director for MSNA, Sharon Maus!
  • Ruby cleans up at Hudson Prairie Elementary School in Wis. along with Nutrition Services Employees Kathy Cole, Nicole Johnson and Lisa Moore.
  • SN’s miniature mascot got competitive while attending the Grady County (Ga.) District Culinary Competition with Nutrition Director Mallory Barrett. Three of Barrett’s employees competed to win, including Cheryl Mason with her Caramel Blueberry & Peach Cobbler (in-picture).
  • Ham Zombie-pocalypse? Actually, no, it’s just lunch in Wilcox-Hildreth (Neb.) Public Schools! Ruby loves the homemade, whole-grain bread with ham and melted cheese—and according to Patti Roads, foodservice director, the students love it too!
  • Ruby loves international travel just as much as she adores trekking through the United States. So, she couldn’t turn down a trip to Curaçao, a Dutch island in the Caribbean, with Shan Burkhardt, child nutrition director, Andalusia City (Ala.) School District.
  • Ruby was able to use both her oven mitt AND her spoon when Sheila Tenner, administrative assistant, Warsaw (Ind.) Community Schools, invited her to Thanksgiving with four generations of her delightful family: Sheila’s mom, Rita; Sheila’s daughter, Jenny; Jenny’s daughters Kyle, Allyssa and Paisley; and Sheila herself, of course!
  • April Laskey, director of school nutrition, Billerica (Mass.) Public Schools, introduced our Ruby to Pete Schmidt, regional sales manager for Butter Buds Foodservice. Ruby was able to sample the four new flavors available to a group of student taste-testers and made several friends among students and staff!
  • .Ruby was kept busy at Machesney Elementary in llinois’ Harlem School District when Food Service Manager Rhonda Hoppe escorted her to the cafeteria for Nacho Day, to the copy room (along with Rene Youngberg) and then home to nap with dog April.
