This month, school nutrition professionals head back to school to begin another year of feeding the nation’s schoolchildren. School Nutrition, the award-winning flagship publication of SNA, gears up for another fantastic school year, too, by offering up an in-depth profile of the Association’s new president, a look at the importance of allies in the success of a school nutrition operation and the kickoff of another invigorating year of STEPS Challenges.

In Off and Running, SN visits with Kentucky born-and-bred Julia Bauscher, who was just installed in July as the 2014-15 president of SNA. Learn more about Bauscher’s background in foodservice, which began at the University of Kentucky; innovations as the director of Jefferson County Public Schools; and what she plans for her tenure as leader of the Association.

Bonus Web Content: Share this president’s profile with your Spanish-speaking coworkers with the Spanish translation available online.

Author Penny McClaren, in her article Won’t You Stand By Me? examines how a strong support system can make the difference in running a successful school nutrition operation. That support can come in the form of a responsive staff, an encouraging superintendent or a new school Wellness Council. Take a look at five administrators who have utilized these support networks to their benefit.

Gain inspiration from the subjects of Tomorrow’s Happily Ever After Starts Today, who have taken small steps to create sustainable, healthy change in their schools. Whether its replacing candy bar-based fundraisers with refreshing walk-a-thons or earning just as much from sales of water bottles as from sugary sodas, the roads these innovative operators have taken might embolden you to head that direction, too.

It’s year three of the STEPS Challenge, and if you’re ready to take your health and wellness efforts to the next level, this isn’t an article you should miss. It focuses on how to take smart steps toward a healthier lifestyle, and lays out the first five months of challenges.

Don’t miss this month’s Food Focus, which spotlights peppers—sweet bells, fiery jalapenos and everything in between—as a colorful vegetable to include in your school meals. Recipes include rigatoni with red peppers, potato-pepper frittata and pear and pepper quesadillas.

Bonus Web Content: Experiment with the spicy flavors that hot sauce provides, and get a recipe for your own from-scratch hot sauce.
