SNA Lauds Universal School Meals Program Act

ARLINGTON, VA – The national, non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) is urging support for The Universal School Meals Program Act of 2021, announced today by Senators Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) and Representatives Ilhan Omar (D-MN) and Gwyn Moore (D-WI).

“Throughout the pandemic, we have witnessed the tremendous benefit of offering all children healthy school meals at no charge,” said SNA President Reggie Ross, SNS. “We know our students are fueled for learning when we give them the choice to take a meal. Children shouldn’t have to worry about meal applications or whether they have money on their accounts so they can eat. We want school nutrition staff to focus on serving students equally without losing time and money on processing paperwork and determining which children are eligible for meal assistance. Now that we know children are getting their healthiest meals at school, it’s time to encourage students to give them a try by eliminating long-standing barriers for children who need a healthy school breakfast or lunch, but don’t take one due to stigma or financial concerns.”

Universal meals is the top priority on SNA’s 2021 Position Paper. Learn more about the benefits of offering all students healthy school meals at no charge.
