Schools to Celebrate “Score Big with School Breakfast” Campaign 

ARLINGTON, VA – This week, schools across the country will recognize National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) with the “Score Big with School Breakfast” campaign. Through special activities, menus and decorations, the celebration will raise awareness of the many benefits of healthy school breakfasts.

The NSBW campaign theme reminds students and families that school breakfast provides a nutritious and energizing start to the day for students. Meals meet federal nutrition standards and school nutrition professionals encourage students to enjoy the fruits, vegetables and whole grains offered with school breakfast. As a result, research shows students who eat school breakfast perform better on standardized tests and have improved classroom behavior and attendance. School breakfast plays a particularly significant role for children of food-insecure families, who depend on school meals as a key source of nutrition.

Thanks to federal COVID-19 waivers, during School Year 2020/21, school breakfast and lunch is offered free to all students without an application, so it’s a great time for students to give school breakfast a try. For students attending class in-person, school breakfast is a convenient choice if they are not hungry before heading to school or have hectic morning schedules. Schools also offer grab-and-go school breakfast and lunch for distance learners to enjoy at home.

The NSBW “Score Big with School Breakfast” campaign includes activity sheets for students and an infographic on the benefits of breakfast for parents. The School Nutrition Association will feature stories and photos from breakfast celebrations around the country on www.TrayTalk.org and  www.Facebook.com/TrayTalk.

National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the School Breakfast Program and to promote the links between eating a nutritious breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles. The “Score Big with School Breakfast” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s.
