30th Annual National School Breakfast Week - March 4-8

 2019-02-27

Schools to celebrate “Start Your Engines with School Breakfast” Campaign

ARLINGTON, VA – From March 4 – 8, school cafeterias across the country will celebrate National School Breakfast Week with the “Start Your Engines with School Breakfast” campaign. The 30th annual celebration will include special events, activities and menus to raise awareness of the many ways school breakfast helps fuel students for academic achievement.

More than 90,000 schools nationwide offer students a variety of healthy breakfast options each day through the School Breakfast Program. Meals meet federal nutrition standards limiting unhealthy fat, calories and sodium. School nutrition professionals encourage students to enjoy the fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low fat or fat free milk offered with school breakfast. Research shows students who eat breakfast at school perform better on standardized tests and have improved classroom behavior and attendance.

School breakfast is a key source of nutrition for students who receive free or reduced price school meals, but it is also a benefit to those who are not hungry before they arrive at school or have hectic morning schedules. A recent SNA survey found that schools are working to make healthy school breakfast a more convenient choice for students. More than 54% of responding school districts offer school breakfast through alternate service venues in addition to the traditional cafeteria line. School breakfast participation continues to rise thanks to breakfast in the classroom programs and grab and go kiosks, which allow students to pick up a healthy meal on the way to class. Thanks to these innovative breakfast service models, schools serve more than 14 million students each school day.

The National School Breakfast Week “Start Your Engines with School Breakfast” campaign gives schools an opportunity to spotlight the nutritious breakfast options available at their schools and educate parents and students on how school breakfast provides an energizing start to the day for students. The campaign includes activity sheets for students and an infographic on the benefits of breakfast for parents.

The School Nutrition Association will also host a National School Breakfast Week giveaway contest on www.Facebook.com/TrayTalk and feature stories from breakfast programs around the country on www.TrayTalk.org. Tray Talk was launched to share success stories straight from the cafeteria and raise awareness of the positive difference school meals make in students’ lives.

National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the School Breakfast Program and to promote the links between eating a nutritious breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles. The “Start Your Engines with School Breakfast” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s.
