SNA Welcomes Recognition of the Need for Greater School Meal Flexibility

National Harbor, MD (May 22, 2014) - The School Nutrition Association (SNA), representing 55,000 school cafeteria professionals nationwide, welcomes calls by the Senate Appropriations Committee to provide schools with the flexibility they need to prepare healthy meals that will increase student consumption of nutritious choices.

"SNA members are on the front lines every school day of the year, so we appreciate that a bi-partisan group of Senators recognize that the best way to ensure our children are eating healthy school meals is to provide greater school meal flexibility," said SNA President Leah Schmidt, SNS.

The School Nutrition Association supports the bi-partisan Harkin/Hoeven amendment to the FY 2015 Agriculture Appropriations bill, adopted earlier today to provide additional flexibility for struggling school meal programs, as a positive first step.

“While we would have liked to see the Committee go further in addressing the challenges that school nutrition professionals face every day, we would like to thank the Committee for hearing the concerns of school cafeteria staff and the students they serve," said Schmidt.

SNA is urging the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and Members of Congress to address several specific challenges related to USDA regulations. Today, SNA also released a fact sheet addressing misinformation that has arisen in the debate over the new standards.
