School Nutrition Professionals Seek Program Support & Simplification

ARLINGTON, VA – The non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) has released its 2019 Position Paper, calling on Congress and the Administration to bolster school meal programs and minimize regulatory burdens. The paper outlines the legislative priorities for the Association, representing 58,000 school nutrition professionals nationwide, in advance of its 47th annual Legislative Action Conference (LAC) next month.

Visit www.SchoolNutrition.org/PositionPaper to read the 2019 Position Paper, which includes links to additional details about each request.

“School meals contribute to the health and academic achievement of nearly 30 million students each school day,” said SNA President Gay Anderson, SNS. “To ensure all students can benefit from healthy school lunches and breakfasts, Congress and USDA must support efforts to increase student participation in school meals and streamline overly complex regulations that hinder program efficiencies."

The paper also recognizes efforts by USDA and Congress to address operational challenges for school meal programs. Last month, SNA supported USDA’s final rule on school meal flexibilities for providing commonsense flexibility under whole grain and sodium rules, while maintaining strong nutrition standards to benefit students.

February 24-26, school nutrition professionals from across the country will participate in LAC, held in Washington, D.C. at the Marriott Marquis. LAC’s “Charge to the Hill” will allow SNA members to meet with their representatives and discuss the 2019 Position Paper and how school meal programs are making a difference for students in their communities.
