SNA Honors School Nutrition Professionals with School Nutrition Employee Week (May 6-10) and Heart of the Program Award

NATIONAL HARBOR, MD (May 6, 2013) – Feeding 31 million students each school day, meeting comprehensive nutrition standards, navigating students’ special dietary needs, and offering service with a smile are all in a day’s work for our nation’s school nutrition professionals.
This week, the non-profit School Nutrition Association (SNA) celebrates the dedication of the women and men working in America’s school cafeterias through School Nutrition Employee Week and the Heart of the Program Award.
SNA’s 2013 Heart of the Program Award winner, Dawn Lehmann of Seckman Middle School in Imperial, Missouri, embodies the passion and commitment of school nutrition professionals.  Dawn regularly volunteers her time to assist nighttime events at her school - from Chili Suppers and Trivia Night to community events to raise money for worthy causes.
Recognizing that many students and families in her community don’t know the fundamentals of cooking, Dawn joined a colleague in creating a class designed to teach the art and love of cooking and promote a healthier way of eating.  On Thursdays after wrapping up her work in the school kitchen, Dawn heads to the elementary school to teach the two hour class for 4th-6th graders.
School Nutrition Employee Week is a great time for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank Dawn and the individuals in their own schools who provide students with healthy school meals and make the cafeteria a warm and welcoming environment.
On Friday, May 3rd, to kick off School Nutrition Employee Week, SNA joined Jarrett J. Krosoczka, author and illustrator of the popular LUNCH LADY graphic novel series, and Random House Children’s Books to host School Lunch Superhero Day.  The event encouraged schools to honor school nutrition professionals and show their appreciation with cards, bouquets and special recognition for their kind service.
SNA hopes the celebration will continue as schools nationwide take time to honor their school nutrition staff.  Creative ideas, downloads are available at
