Boston, MA (July 16, 2014) - During its 68th Annual National Conference, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) installed Julia Bauscher, SNS, as its 67th president for the 2014-2015 school year. Bauscher, the director of school and community nutrition services for Jefferson County Public School (JCPS) system in Louisville, Kentucky, takes the helm of an organization that represents 55,000 school nutrition professionals nationwide.

Bauscher began a successful career in school foodservice after graduating from the University of Kentucky with a degree in dietetics. After 12 years in foodservice sales, Bauscher joined JCPS as coordinator of food procurement and has been with the district for 20 years. She held her first position with the district for five years before becoming the operations manager of the Nutrition Service Center, and took over as director of school and community nutrition services for the 145-site district in 2009.

Under Bauscher’s leadership, JCPS has implemented farm to school, Breakfast in the Classroom, and an at-risk supper program. The district also offers a mobile foodservice program, the Bus Stop Café, which added an additional bus to the fleet for Summer 2014. This year, JCPS is launching the Community Eligibility Provision, allowing nearly 55,000 students at 95 schools to received free breakfast and lunch, regardless of income. This not only saves families money —$122 per child a year for those that previously qualified for reduced-price meals, and $700 per child per year for those who did not—but it also removes the stigma often associated with receiving free school meals.

Bauscher also has a storied history with SNA, having served at the state level as president of Kentucky SNA. On the national level, she sat on the Nutrition Committee for a number of years, including serving as its chair. She was elected Vice President for the national organization for the 2012-2013 school year and served as President-Elect in 2013-2014.
