School nutrition professionals and industry partners are encouraged to use SNA’s easy-to-customize template letter to submit individual comments to HHS and USDA’s Request for Information on developing a uniform federal definition for ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

SNA submitted comments and is now urging all school nutrition advocates to add their voices!

Any definition of UPFs adopted at the federal level will likely influence future nutrition standards and product development. It is critical that any federal definition of UPFs be grounded in sound science, reflect practical realities and support the mission of child nutrition programs.

Your front-line experience is essential: SNA stressed that schools “simply lack the staff, equipment, infrastructure, time and critical funding to scratch prepare all menu options” and emphasized that federal agencies need to hear directly from school nutrition professionals about operational realities.

School nutrition professionals and industry partners can submit comments on SNA’s Action Network. The federal comment period closes September 23, 2025.
