The School Nutrition Association (SNA) has signed on as a supporter of the School Hunger Elimination Act, first introduced during the 117th Congress by Representative Jahana Hayes (D-CT).
- The bill would expand access to free or reduced-price school meals by directly certifying school-age children receiving Medicaid and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
- In the Senate, the School Hunger Elimination Act is included in S.4525, introduced by Sen. Bob Casey (D-PA) and Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA).
SNA President Shannon Gleave, RDN, SNS, said:
“Too often, children in need go without healthy school meals due to the burdensome meal benefit application process. The School Hunger Elimination Act will ensure more income-eligible children can automatically receive free and reduced-price school meals, without their families and schools having to worry about paperwork or processing.”
Members are encouraged to use SNA’s Federal Bills Tracker for real-time updates on child nutrition legislation.
