Schools to Celebrate “School Breakfast: Out of This World” Campaign, March 2-6

ARLINGTON, VA – This week, school cafeterias across the country are celebrating National School Breakfast Week (NSBW) with the “School Breakfast: Out of This World” campaign. The celebration features special events, activities and menus to raise awareness of how healthy school breakfasts fuel students for success in the classroom and beyond.

In more than 90,000 schools nationwide, 14.7 million students choose from a variety of healthy breakfast options each day thanks to the School Breakfast Program. Meals meet federal nutrition standards limiting unhealthy fat, calories and sodium. School nutrition professionals encourage students to enjoy the fruits, vegetables and whole grains offered with school breakfast.  Research shows students who eat school breakfast perform better on standardized tests and have improved classroom behavior and attendance. School breakfast plays a particularly significant role for children of food-insecure families, who depend on school meals as a key source of nutrition.

School breakfast is a convenient choice for students who are not hungry before heading to school or have hectic morning schedules. Today, many schools offer breakfast through alternate service venues in addition to the traditional cafeteria line. School breakfast participation continues to rise thanks to breakfast in the classroom programs and grab and go kiosks, which allow students to pick up a healthy meal on the way to class.

The NSBW “School Breakfast: Out of This World” campaign reminds the entire school community that breakfast allows students to “reach the outer limits” of their potential. The campaign includes  activity sheets for students and an  infographic on the benefits of breakfast for parents.

The School Nutrition Association will feature stories and photos from breakfast programs around the country on www.TrayTalk.organd www.Facebook.com/TrayTalk. Tray Talk was launched to share success stories straight from the cafeteria and raise awareness of the positive difference school meals make in students’ lives.

National School Breakfast Week was launched in 1989 to raise awareness of the School Breakfast Program and to promote the links between eating a nutritious breakfast, academic achievement and healthy lifestyles. The “School Breakfast: Out of This World” campaign is made possible by the nonprofit School Nutrition Association and Kellogg’s.
