The federal shutdown has ended. Following the Senate’s passage of funding legislation Monday night, the House approved the measure Wednesday evening by a vote of 222 to 209, sending it to the President’s desk for his signature.
The legislation includes a continuing resolution to fund most federal agencies through January 30, 2026, and a full-year Fiscal Year 2026 appropriations bill for Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies.
The Agriculture appropriations bill includes:
$37.8 billion for Child Nutrition programs, including the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program, Child and Adult Care Food Program, and Summer Food Service Program
- $10 million for school equipment grants
- $5 million for Farm to School Programs
- $1 million for the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN)
SNA’s advocacy during the shutdown:
Throughout the shutdown, SNA remained in close communication with USDA and state agencies to monitor funding levels and advocate for clear and consistent full funding of school nutrition programs. As families faced uncertainty with reduced SNAP benefits and furloughs, school meals served as a critical resource for students and communities. School nutrition professionals stepped up to address increased need, expanding services, promoting meal benefit applications and connecting families with community resources.
