Festive Food Favorites

The cafeteria is often one of the busiest places in a school building. When I was younger, I remember fast-walking (no running!) to get as close as possible to the start of the lunch line. When students get a chance to sit down, it’s their time to catch up with friends and take a much-needed break from things like quadrilateral shapes or the periodic table. But for school nutrition professionals, it’s an opportunity to create experiences that students remember long after their meals are served.

Throughout the school year, holidays and special observances give cafeterias a chance to mix things up and bring a little extra fun. Think a Halloween-themed lunch, a winter celebration or an Earth Day activity… these moments can really encourage students to try not only new foods but reinforce the cafeteria’s role as an important part of school culture. “Fun” may not be listed in nutrition standards, but as you know, it can be an effective ingredient...
