AASA and SNA Urge Congress to Help School Meal Programs

 2015-10-26

Washington, DC – The School Nutrition Association (SNA) and the School Superintendents Association (AASA) have sent a  letter to key members of Congress calling for a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill that provides increased funding and flexibility under new nutrition standards for school meals and snacks.

The organizations highlighted the financial impact of the regulations on school meal programs and the districts they serve:

“Congress cannot ignore the higher costs and operational challenges resulting from under-funded and overly prescriptive regulatory requirements stemming from the 2010 reauthorization. School districts are being forced to financially subsidize meals at the expense of educational programs.”

“We are all committed to ensuring students receive healthy school meals, but the financial impact of the new rules threatens school meal programs and efforts to better serve students,” added Jean Ronnei, SNS, SNA President and Chief Operations Officer at Saint Paul Public Schools, MN. “Congress must take steps to restore the financial sustainability of these programs for the sake of the children we serve.”
