U.S. Agriculture Secretary Perdue to Speak at SNA’s LAC

ARLINGTON, VA – Nearly 900 school nutrition professionals from across the country will participate in School Nutrition Association’s (SNA) 48th annual  Legislative Action Conference (LAC) next week to urge Congress to increase student access to healthy school meals and support efforts to simplify child nutrition programs. As part of LAC’s “Charge to the Hill,” attendees will meet with their Congressional representatives to discuss school nutrition issues, SNA’s 2020 Position Paper and support for the proposed rule to simplify school meal service and monitoring.

LAC attendees will also hear from U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue during a fireside chat on Monday, March 9. Media wishing to attend must contact Diane Pratt-Heavner at media@schoolnutrition.org in advance to be registered. Follow the discussion at #LAC2020.

LAC will feature several key events including:

SUNDAY, MARCH 8

  • Education sessions to support attendees working to improve school meal programs
  • Political analysis from Dr. Larry Sabato (1:30 pm)
  • Student panel discussion offering insight on school meal trends (3:20 pm)

MONDAY, MARCH 9

  • USDA update on child nutrition program regulations (8:30 am)
  • Release of new research on the benefits and cost of universal school meals and Eliminating the Reduced Price category (ERP) (10:30 am)
  • Remarks by Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman Pat Roberts (R-KS) and an SNA tribute (11:15 am)
  • Fireside chat with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue, SNA President Gay Anderson, SNS and SNA CEO Patricia Montague, CAE (3:00 pm)

TUESDAY, MARCH 10

  • Charge to the Hill. Note: SNA leaders and school nutrition directors will be available for interviews.
