State Policy & Grassroots

Federal regulations serve as the baseline for school nutrition programs thus allowing state governments and local school boards an element of local control. States have implemented stricter nutrition standards, providing additional funds, or mandating participation in certain school meal program. This allows for states and schools to craft policies that better reflect their communities and unique needs.

SNA tracks legislation that could impact school nutrition programs as it moves through the state legislatures. Information and analysis of the legislation is distributed to SNA Affiliates to ensure members are aware of and able to respond to legislation of particular concern. This section provides not only reports on the range of legislation and policies across the United States, but also how SNA members can affectively work with their state and local governments on ensuring strong and stable school nutrition programs.

STATE LEGISLATION AND POLICY REPORTS

Every school nutrition program is different because despite the baseline of federal requirements, each must navigate the state and local policies as well. By providing timely information on current legislation, as well as looking at future trends, SNA gives its membership the tools necessary to advocate for improved policies and regulation.

STATE AND GRASSROOTS ADVOCACY TOOLS

This site is geared to empowering the membership on how to best advocate for their programs at the grassroots and state level. Here you will find guides on how to create a positive message, moving forward positive legislation, best practices and how to best respond to problematic policies.

LOCAL WELLNESS POLICIES

Since 2006, all schools that participate in the federally supported school meal programs must develop and implement a local school wellness policy. The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 expanded the scope of local school wellness policies by requiring additional stakeholders for development, implementation and review.
