Election of Chair and Vice-Chair of the SNF Board of Directors

The Board of Directors of the School Nutrition Foundation has elected Sandra Ford, SNS, as Chair of the SNF Board, and Mary Begalle, PhD, RDN, SNS, as Vice Chair of the Board for 2015-16.

Sandra Ford is the Chief Support Services Officer for Manatee County School District in Florida. Ford has been a member of SNA since 1985 and has served on numerous committees. She served as SNA President and served on the Foundation Board in 2012-13. Subsequently, she was elected to the SNF Board as an at-large member and began her first three-year term in 2013-14. She has served as the Treasurer of the Foundation and as the co-chair of the Planned Giving Committee. She also served on the SNF Task Force to address the restructuring of the SNF Board.

Mary Begalle is the Senior Director of Industry Relations for Schwan’s Food Service, Inc. Begalle has been a member of SNA since 1997 and has served on various SNA Committees, including the Nutrition Committee, the Professional Development Committee, and the Certificate and Credentialing Governing Council. She has served on the SNF Board as an industry member since 2009-10. Mary Begalle was an active member of the Campaign Committee for the “Invest in Us” effort in 1995 and 1996 that secured over $3 million, most of which was earmarked for a permanent endowment to support public education to promote child nutrition through school foodservice.

Following a process of restructuring the SNF Board of Directors, six new members are joining the Foundation Board this fall. New members include:

2016 Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes

We have started planning for the 2016 Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes. The 2016 event will be held Monday, February 29th at the Marriott Marquis during SNA’s Legislative Action Conference (LAC) in Washington, D.C. For more information, visit

Do you know a school nutrition professional who goes above and beyond their day-to-day activities to make a difference in the lives of those in their schools, in their communities, and beyond? Annual Fund 2015

The 2015 Annual Fund has started strong and with less than 100 days left in the year, the competition between states for the title of “Giving Champion” is heating up! As of September 9, 2015, leading the State Associations with 1,001+ members is Florida with 1.4% participation, followed by three State Associations with 0.7% participation – Georgia, Mississippi, and Virginia. Giving Tuesday 2015

Get ready for Giving Tuesday on December 1, 2015! Consider getting SNA members and others in your state involved. Encourage them to post “UNselfies” and to spread the word on Facebook and Twitter. For more ideas, click here.

Scholarships for 2015-16

A total of 72 SNA members have received scholarships totaling $75,000 for 2015-16 for attendance at conferences and for educational pursuits.

  • PepsiCo Foodservice provided funding for scholarships for SNA members who attended their first Annual National Conference in 2015.
  • Schwan’s Food Service has provided scholarships totaling more than $1.5 million over the past three decades for SNA members who are working on degrees. Since 1998, over 750 scholarships, including 41 for 2015-16 have been awarded through the generosity of Schwan’s.

In 2015, the School Nutrition Foundation also offered $25,000 in Annual Fund Scholarships from the 2014 Annual Fund Campaign during SNF’s 50th Anniversary. These scholarships were awarded to 30 SNA members for 2015-16. Other scholarships include SNF Professional Growth Scholarships, the Nancy Curry Award, and the Sandi Brooker Award.

2016 Josephine Martin National Policy Fellow

Members of SNA who are interested in receiving the 2016 Josephine Martin National Policy Fellowship are submitting their applications. The fellowship enables an SNA member to attend the Legislative Action Conference (LAC) in Washington, D.C., for the first time. The 2016 recipient will be the fourth SNA member to be named a Policy Fellow and will travel to the nation’s capital in February 2016 to participate in LAC. Applications must be submitted by Monday, November 16, 2015.

Kathleen Stitt Award

The Kathleen Stitt Award gives one participant of the School Nutrition Research & Best Practices Showcase, held annually at the Annual National Conference (ANC), $500 to help defray travel expenses incurred to attend the conference. The 2015 winner was Lacy Stephens from Bozeman, Montana. Stephens traveled to Salt Lake City in July, where she presented her work, entitled, “Outcomes of the Montana Cook Fresh Culinary Workshop.” She was also selected as the winner of the poster research award.

Equipment Awards

In addition to grants for scholarships, the School Nutrition Foundation awards two equipment grants annually, one from Baxter Equipment Company and the second from Winston Industries.

  • The Baxter Equipment for Education Grant provided a Mini Rotating Rack Convection Oven for Lincoln Elementary School in Grand Island Public Schools in Grand Island, Nebraska. Kristi Spellman, Director of Nutrition Services in Grand Island, was unable to attend the Annual National Conference (ANC), but her assistant director, Lisa Moss, attended ANC and was on hand for a presentation at Baxter’s exhibit booth. In addition to the equipment, Baxter provided $500 for Moss to use toward registration and travel expenses for ANC.
  • Ten pieces of equipment were offered in the Winston Industries Equipment Grant. The recipient was determined through a competitive grant process and the equipment was awarded to the Henry County School District in Collinsville, Virginia, where Marci Lexa is Director of School Nutrition Programs.

The Kids' Safe and Healthful Foods Project study – a collaboration between The Pew Charitable Trusts and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation – indicated in a March 2014 report that most schools (88 percent) need at least one additional piece of kitchen equipment. The funding available for new equipment has grown but remains limited. Schools need other opportunities to acquire the equipment needed to provide healthy meals to school children.

We are grateful to Baxter Equipment Company and Winston Industries for providing equipment to the respective school districts that were chosen from the applications submitted for consideration.

School Nutrition Legacy Circle

From time to time, we need to review our financial plans for the future and update our wills. When that time comes, you can include a provision for the School Nutrition Foundation and the other organizations that are important to you. But you don’t have to prepare a new will to make a lasting legacy at the Foundation. You can create a codicil to your existing will or you can also make the Foundation one of the beneficiaries of your retirement plan or an existing life insurance policy.

Breakfast in the Classroom

The School Nutrition Foundation in collaboration with the Food and Research Action Center (FRAC), the National Association of Elementary School Principals Foundation (NAESPF) and the National Education Association (NEA) Healthy Futures continues to assist school districts in implementing Breakfast in the Classroom (BIC). The four organizations, which form the Partners for Breakfast in the Classroom, are actively working in seven states: Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. To date, in this phase of the project, the Partners have awarded over $1.4 million to 61 schools in the seven states for equipment and for other expenses involved in beginning a BIC program.

School Nutrition Heroes in School Nutrition magazine

The School Nutrition magazine reported in its May 2015 issue on the 2015 Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes. The two pages featured photos from the evening, the names of those recognized as School Nutrition Heroes, and the names of the Corporate Sponsors who made the event successful in raising dollars for scholarships for SNA members.

Jill Kidd, MS, RD, SNS, who was recognized as a School Nutrition Hero in 2015, was one of the SNA members whose profiles appeared in the June/July 2015 issue of the magazine.

The August 2015 issue of the magazine included an article, “Being the Change They Want to See,” by Mark Ward, Sr. PhD, that highlighted three School Nutrition Heroes. Those featured were Sandy Kramer from Yankton, S.D., who was recognized at the 2014 Celebration, and Nancy Younglove from Wolcott, N.Y., and Cathy Potter from Maryville, Tenn., who were honored in 2015 as School Nutrition Heroes.

Federal Employees Can Support School Nutrition Foundation

Do you know anyone who works for the federal government, is in the military, or works for the postal service? If so, let them know that the School Nutrition Foundation is an approved charity for the 2015 Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), the workplace giving program for federal employees. Provide them with SNF’s five-digit CFC code, 22373, and ask them to designate all or part of their CFC contribution to SNF. Tell them why you support SNF and let them know how SNF helps SNA members provide millions of high-quality, low-cost meals to students across the nation every day. To learn more, click here.

In Memory of Jane Wynn

We were saddened to learn that SNA Past President Jane Wynn passed away on May 6, 2015, in Pompano Beach, Florida. Wynn was a champion for the Josephine Martin National Policy Fellowship Fund, which she and other past presidents established in 2012 in honor of Dr. Josephine Martin. At her request, the family asked that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Josephine Martin National Policy Fellowship.

Annual Fund

Annual National Conference

The School Nutrition Foundation’s booth at the 2015 Annual National Conference (ANC) in Salt Lake City in July was an exciting place! Bells were ringing and members were adding their names to a colorful list of names and states as they made contributions to the Annual Fund. A total of 91 contributions were made totaling $3,282 for an increase in number of gifts of 167.6% as compared to contributions at ANC 2014. The increase in total was 69.6% compared to the prior year at ANC. The average gift was $37.06.
