SNA Members Leap into Action While at LAC 2016

SNA’s 44th Annual Legislative Action Conference (LAC) got off to a great start yesterday when nearly 900 school professionals gathered in Washington, D.C. to urge Congress to invest in school meals. There was plenty of buzz related to the important work ahead, as well as the new location for the conference—the newest and largest hotel in the nation’s capital—the Marriott Marquis.

On Sunday, keynote speaker Amy Walter regaled the audience with insights into the mechanics that make the political machine run, including that there is no conventional wisdom when it comes to politics. Building on the hilarity that is this year’s Presidential campaign, conference attendees enjoyed a luncheon with special entertainment by the famous satirical group, The Capitol Steps. Additionally, conference goers attended breakout sessions designed to share school nutrition best practices throughout the morning.

Today’s schedule is equally packed with four additional General Sessions featuring a USDA update, a Capitol Hill Roundtable Discussion with Senate Agriculture and House Education and the Workforce Committee Staff, “Relationship Building with Lawmakers and Why It’s Important” and the presentation of the SNA 2016 Position Paper.

Before attendees leap into action to “Charge the Hill” tomorrow, many will take part in the School Nutrition Foundation’s Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes this evening. Now in its third year, this special event will honor five remarkable school nutrition professional who have dedicated their lives to serving the needs of their schools and communities. The funds raised through this event will support the Foundation, including continuing educational opportunities for SNA members.

On Tuesday, SNA members will urge Congressional leaders to pass a Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill and provide additional funding to assist school meal programs as they manage increased costs. If you’re at LAC, use your 114th Congress, Congressional Directory to look up your House and Senate members’ Twitter handle and follow them! Tweet at them in your social media posts, so they are engaged before you even reach Capitol Hill. Be sure to tag @schoollunch and use the hashtag #LAC16. By tagging @schoollunch, we will more easily be able to retweet and share your messages, increasing the reach!

SNA’s Legislative Action Conference is your opportunity to make a difference for school nutrition, when you bring your voice, your passion and your expertise directly to the halls of Congress. Be sure to mark your calendar for LAC 2017, April 2-4, 2017.
