“Smart Snacks” Interim Final Rule and Additional Meal Pattern Guidelines Effective Today

July 1, 2014 -- Beginning today, the USDA Smart Snacks rule goes into effect. This means that all foods and beverages sold outside the school meal program during the school day must meet the nutritional standards as laid out here. SNA, in partnership with the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, developed this Smart Snacks Resource Guide to help your school nutrition program meet these new standards. The Alliance also developed this product calculator that can help you see if a specific item meets the standards.

Additionally, there are further meal requirements for breakfast and lunch taking effect. The USDA timeline provides additional information on which specific new standards must be met for School Year 2014-2015. SNA developed A Fresh Start for School Breakfast resource guide as well as a Meal Pattern Guideline to assist our members in menu planning. USDA regularly updates its website with further guidance and policy changes.

If you are attending ANC, there will be multiple education sessions on these topic as well as many opportunities to network with your peers! The presentations from this meeting, as well as previous meetings, can be found on our website.
