SNA President Welcomes Agriculture Secretary Perdue and Rep. Noem to Brandon Valley SD

On Thursday, October 25, SNA President and Child Nutrition Director Gay Anderson, Superintendent Dr. Jarod Larson and Principal Nick Skibsted were thrilled to host a visit from U.S. Agriculture Secretary Perdue and U.S. Rep. Kristi Noem at Brandon Valley Intermediate School. Secretary Perdue and Rep. Noem assisted foodservice staff in the lunch line and afterwards sat down to enjoy lunch with a group of fifth graders. Federal Register: School Breakfast Data Collection

On October 26, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) submitted a comment request to the Federal Register regarding the collection of school breakfast program data. The information collected is used to monitor state agency and SFA compliance, determine the amount of funds to be reimbursed, evaluate and adjust program operations, and to monitor program funding and trends. Comments are due by November 26, 2018.

SNF Winston Equipment Grant Applications Open

The School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) is now accepting applications for the 2019 Winston Equipment Grant. The 2019 Winston Equipment Grant opened on October 22, 2018 and will close on January 31, 2019. The recipient of this grant will be awarded 10 pieces of equipment, which could include CVap® holding cabinets, holding drawers, and rethermalizers. State Snapshots

California Will Use Medicaid Data to Certify Students for Meals, Require CEP in Some Schools

In early October, California Governor Jerry Brown signed into law SB 138, which authorizes the use of Medicaid participation data to certify students for free and reduced price school meals. The law also requires schools to adopt CEP if they are eligible to receive the free federal reimbursement rate for all reimbursable school meals served.

School Meals Bills Introduced in New Jersey

The New Jersey legislature introduced three new school meals bills last week. A4595 in the Assembly and identical bill S3111 in the Senate would allow a School Food Authority (SFA) to enter a contract with a Food Service Management Company (FSMC) to implement the School Breakfast Program (SBP) or the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) through a cost reimbursable contract or a fixed-price contract.

A4622 would require SFAs to provide to the parents or guardians of each student information about and an application for free and reduced-price school meals at the beginning of each school year or upon the enrollment of a new student. The bill would also require that a school district make at least two attempts to contact a student’s parent or guardian to request that they complete an application for free or reduced-price meals when a student owes money for five or more meals.

Mystery Chat Corner

On October 30, 1938, Orson Welles’s radio adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds aired, prompting panic among listeners.
Directed and narrated by Welles, the episode of The Mercury Theatre on the Air was presented as news bulletins interrupting standard radio programming, causing some listeners who missed the introduction to mistake the radio drama for real events. The episode prompted panicked calls to CBS, newspapers, and police departments to find out if the alien invasion being described was indeed real.
