Take the SNA 2019 Position Paper Survey!

SNA is preparing to craft its 2019 Position Paper and it’s time to make your voice heard! We need to hear from YOU about the challenges your program is facing and what can be done here in Washington to support school nutrition professionals nationwide. Your responses to last year's survey set in motion major events in school nutrition policy and were the catalyst for increased funding and program simplification. Let's keep the ball rolling!

The 2019 Position Paper survey was emailed to all SNA members last week, and the deadline to complete the survey is Friday, October 26. If you have any questions, please reach out to SNA’s Government Affairs and Media Relations team at advocacy@schoolnutrition.org.

FNS Provides Guidance for FY 2019 CACFP, NSLP and SBP Preschool Meal Patterns

Last week, the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) posted guidance for the FY 2019 meal pattern requirements for the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), as well as for meals served to infants and preschoolers in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).

The new meal pattern requirements were due to be implemented effective October 1, 2017 under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA). To support operators and state agencies adapting to these new requirements, FNS established a transition period and provided technical assistance during the first year of the new meal patterns. Feedback that the agency received suggest that some operational challenges remain and, in light of that, FNS encourages state agencies to use the flexibilities available to them in HHFKA. FNS will continue to provide technical assistance resources on the CACFP and Team Nutrition websites in addition to trainings with the Institute of Child Nutrition (ICN).

Visit the USDA website for complete contest rules and photo tips.

SNA State Agency Advisory Council Is Looking for Two New Members!

Are you a director of the agency that oversees the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) in your state? The State Agency Advisory Council (SAAC) has two open positions—a member to represent the USDA Midwest Region and a member to represent the USDA West Region.

Serving on the SAAC offers exciting opportunities to grow professionally, develop new skills, work on issues from a national perspective and contribute to the school nutrition profession. SNA needs members who want to play an active role in fulfilling SNA’s strategic plan goals and in shaping the future of school nutrition programs. The council is charged by the Board of Directors to complete work assigned by the President, based on the Association’s Strategic Plan. Download the State Agency Advisory Council interest form.

If you have any questions, please contact Deborah Van Balen, SNA Executive Assistant, at dvanbalen@schoolnutrition.org, or (800) 877-8822, ext. 114. Please return the interest form by November 16, 2018.

Born This Day in 2001...
On October 23, 2001, Apple unveiled the first iPod. Steve Jobs said Apple’s first-generation portable music player put “1,000 songs in your pocket.” Its iconic design and award-winning features helped popularize digital music players and, along with the iTunes store, it would have a profound impact on the way we buy, collect and listen to music.
