Take the SNA 2019 Position Paper Survey!

SNA is preparing to craft its 2019 Position Paper and it’s time to make your voice heard! We need to hear from YOU about the challenges your program is facing and what can be done here in Washington to support school nutrition professionals nationwide. Your responses to last year's survey set in motion major events in school nutrition policy and were the catalyst for increased funding and program simplification. Let's keep the ball rolling!

The 2019 Position Paper survey was emailed to all SNA members last week, and the deadline to complete the survey is Friday, October 26. If you have any questions, please reach out to SNA’s Government Affairs and Media Relations team at advocacy@schoolnutrition.org.

SNA’s 2019 LAC Keynote Shares Perspective

Pulitzer Prize-winning historian and SNA’s 2019 Legislative Action Conference (LAC) keynote speaker, Doris Kearns Goodwin, appeared on CBS to share a fresh perspective on these political times. In her video, Goodwin opens with, “Everywhere I go, people stop to ask, ’Are these the worst of times?’”

Goodwin urges us to remember there are many encouraging signs of healing, such as increased activism, younger voices and diverse candidates. “It is time for us to heed Abraham Lincoln's plea that we engage together in calm and enlarged consideration ranging far above personal and partisan politics. I believe the renewal of the moral vision and purpose that built and sustained us in past turbulent times can do so again.”

Goodwin’s latest book, Leadership in Turbulent Times, will be available at SNA’s LAC 2019 book signing event.

SNA Submits Comments on Special Milk Program

Last week, SNA responded to a request for comment on the reporting and accountability requirements of the Special Milk Program (SMP). In the letter that SNA submitted, the Association urged the agency to investigate its finding that the number of participating institutions had declined, particularly if this decline was due to the administrative complexities of implementing SMP.

Bill to Increase Breakfast After the Bell Introduced in Congress

Congressman Ami Bera (D-CA) introduced the Breakfast After the Bell Act of 2018, which, if passed, would provide additional funds to certain schools that serve breakfast to students after the start of the school day. Schools that have adopted the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), or that have an identified student percentage of 40% or more, would receive an additional 10 cents for each reimbursable breakfast served after the beginning of the school day.

SNA Blog Post Celebrates Locally Grown Foods During #NSLW18 & #F2SMonth

There are a multitude of reasons to celebrate in the cafeteria this week: It’s both National School Lunch Week (NSLW) and National Farm to School (F2S) Month. SNA President Gay Anderson, SNS, was invited to share the good news on the National Farm to School Network’s blog. Her Monday morning post highlighted the benefits of healthy school meals and how school nutrition professionals are incorporating more locally grown foods into meals, while educating students about the foods grown in their communities. SNA wants to hear how you’re celebrating #NSLW18 and #F2SMonth—share your labors of love on social media and tag SNA in your posts. Examples will be showcased in the December issue of School Nutrition. Photos and short reports can also be sent to snmagazine@schoolnutrition.org.
