USDA Publishes P-EBT Q&A and Template Plan

On November 16, 2020, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) published, "P-EBT Q&A- Assistance for Children in Schools that are Closed or have Reduced Attendance" and "State Plan for Pandemic-EBT: Children in School for the 2020-2021 School Year." These documents serve as a guide and a template to assist States in developing plans to operate Pandemic-Electronic Benefit Transfer (P-EBT) for school children during the 2020-21 school year. School nutrition staff at Campbell County Public Schools in Kentucky managed to serve over 47,000 school meals in ONE day to students in their community.

SNA Announces Process for Nominating USDA Political Appointees

President-elect Joe Biden is currently appointing individuals to high-level positions at various departments and agencies, including the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). During past Administrations, SNA has participated in this process by suggesting names for appointed positions at USDA. As the Biden Administration continues to develop, SNA will again be putting forth candidates for consideration. We would like SNA members to help identify these individuals who should be considered by the Biden Transition Team for appointed positions. Please check out the full announcement for more information on how to submit your application. Applications are due by December 4, 2020. Federal Register: SNA Comments on CN Labeling

In response to a USDA Federal Register notice of October 30, 2020, SNA provided comments on Child Nutrition (CN) Labeling Program. In the letter, SNA urged that the labeling program remain user-friendly and streamlined for manufacturers, especially as new products enter into the school foodservice programs. Federal Register: SNA Comments on CN Database

In response to a USDA Federal Register notice of September 29, 2020, SNA provided comments on a proposed information collection for the Child Nutrition (CN) database. In the letter, SNA requests that compilations are accurate and updated as product formulations change and provides suggestions to modernize the database. Read SNA’s comment letter.

New Jersey Proposes Food Pantry Assistance Grant Program

A 4969 appropriates $4 million for the Food Pantry Assistance Program (grant program) to aid New Jersey food pantries and food banks in purchasing foods to provide meals to food insecure areas, which have expanded significantly as the COVID-19 public health emergency continues.
