Federal Policy

Sen. Udall Introduces Bill to Increase Access to Nutritious Meals for Native Students

Senator Tom Udall of New Mexico introduced the Tribal Nutrition Improvement Act of 2019, which would allow federally recognized tribes to directly administer federal Child Nutrition Programs, including the National School Lunch Program, the Summer Food Service Program and the Child and Adult Care Food Program. A press release is available on Senator Udall’s website, and you can read the full text of the bill here.

FNS Seeks Comment on Efforts to Test Nutrition Education Messaging

In a Federal Register notice published in April, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) issued a request for comment on the agency’s generic clearance to conduct consumer research to test nutrition education messages. The research is used to identify consumer understanding of the messages used to promote nutrition education, and to gauge consumer reaction to prototypes of nutrition education products. Comments must be received on or before June 4, 2019.

State Snapshots

Maine Governor Signs Styrofoam Ban into Law

In April, Maine became the first state to ban disposable food service containers made of expanded polystyrene, which is colloquially known as Styrofoam. The new law prohibits using the containers to process, prepare, sell or provide food or beverages beginning January 1, 2021. Bans on expanded polystyrene, plastic bags and single-use plastic straws were a trend identified in SNA’s 2019 First Quarter Legislative Summary.

On May 14, 1973, the first US space station, Skylab, was launched from Kennedy Space Center.
Skylab orbited the earth until July 11, 1979, and during that time was host to three missions crewed by astronauts. The station logged nearly 2,000 hours of scientific and medical experiments and recorded tens of thousands of frames of film of the Earth and the Sun.
