USDA FNS Administrator Shares Thoughts on SNA’s Annual Conference

In this recent USDA blog post, Administrator of USDA Food and Nutrition Services, and Acting Deputy Undersecretary of USDA Food, Nutrition and Consumer Services, Brandon Lipps, shares positive reflections on his time at SNA’s 2018 Annual National Conference.

The thoughtfully written post reflects on the opportunity for USDA to connect with their customers, school nutrition professionals, to gain a greater understanding of the complexities they face. “I was grateful for all of the thoughtful, honest feedback. Opportunities to hear directly from our customers are extremely valuable – not just for me, but for all of my staff,” said Lipps.

Rep. Hartzler Introduces “Local Control of School Lunch Act”

Representative Vicky Hartzler (R-MO) introduced the “Local Control of School Lunch Act.” H.R. 6541 would repeal sodium restrictions, calorie limits and whole grains requirements for school meals. The bill also repeals Paid Lunch Equity requirements.

Corrections to SY 2018-19 SN Reimbursement Rate Notices

The USDA posted notices of corrections to the tables published in the Federal Register for School Year 2018-19 reimbursement rates. The maximum NSLP paid reimbursement is .39 instead of .30 as indicated in the original notice. The CACFP monthly administrative payments to sponsors for each sponsored day care home: Tier II “Next 150” should say 105 dollars instead of 195.

FNS Requests Comments on Summer Food Site Locations for State Agencies

In a Federal Register notice published on August 7, the USDA Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) requested comments from agencies and the public on the voluntary collection of summer meal site information from State Agencies. FNS is seeking input on: the proper performance and functions of the agency, the accuracy of the agency’s estimate of the burden of collecting information, ways to enhance the quality, utility and clarity of the collected information and ways to minimize the burden of collection of information. Comments regarding this information collection may be submitted online and must be received by October 9, 2018.

On August 14, 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law.

The Social Security Act established a variety of programs, including unemployment insurance, aid for dependent children and state grants to provide medical care. The program now known as Social Security was created by Title II of the Act, which created “Federal Old-Age Benefits” to be paid to workers when they retired at age 65. The first payments to retirees were made in 1940.
