SNA Announces the Passing of Past President Elizabeth Parker McPherson


Past President Elizabeth Parker McPherson The School Nutrition Association (SNA) sorrowfully announces the passing of past president Elizabeth “Lib” Parker McPherson. McPherson, a native of North Carolina, was president of SNA from 1992 to 1993. She died on December 21, 2019 at the age of 90.

McPherson earned her bachelor’s in home economics with a concentration in nutrition from what is now University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1951. She became the first supervisor of school nutrition programs in Caswell County (N.C.) Schools in 1966 and was devoted to finding opportunities make a difference for children through school nutrition.

She served during 1990-91 as the Association’s first traditionally elected vice president. “As the first person elected for a full three-year term as vice president, president-elect and president, I have a deep appreciation for the value this structural change has brought to my ability to serve ASFSA (now known as SNA),” McPherson explained. When the Association held its first National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, McPherson was President-elect. She found the conference to be useful in helping her develop the Plan of Action for the following year.

McPherson accepted the offer to become a non-profit partner with the Milliken Company’s Packaging Division, which enabled the Association to reshape the approach to strategic planning. Thanks in part to this new approach, a new division of responsibility was developed among leadership that McPherson credited with helping to achieve her goals as president, which led her to being elected as president of the NC School Nutrition Association.

Beginning in 1992, SNA presidents, at the end of their term, began assuming the role of president of the School Nutrition Foundation (formerly School Food Service Foundation.) McPherson was the first president of the Foundation. In addition to SNA president, she also served as SNA Southeast Regional Director, and at the national level she served as SNA Treasurer.

McPherson was committed to nutrition and hunger, and was an active member in her North Carolina community. She served as Chair on Orange Presbytery’s Hunger Ministry committee, where she was a representative for a board meeting in the Christian Health Center in Mbuji-Mayi, Zaire (now the Democratic Republic of Congo). In 1990, McPherson also received the Humanitarian Service Award, a national honor given to a nutrition and foodservice professional who is committed to ending hunger, from Food Management magazine.

McPherson is survived by her children and their spouses, six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, a brother, a sister-in-law and 11 nieces and nephews.
