Read the June-July 2019 Issue of School Nutrition Magazine 2019-06-14 It’s time we celery-brate the American farmer! From farm-raised beef to homegrown beets, we fuel ourselves daily thanks to the efforts of these hardworking American men and women. But there is so much more to this industry than chicken bars and row cops. For the city slickers who don’t have frequent farm-life exposure, this is a multi-faceted industry that is ever-changing. (It no longer looks like American Gothic anymore…) While one magazine issue can’t cover this multi-faceted industry, the June/July edition of School Nutrition is out, and it highlights American agriculture today. Through personal stories, farm-to-school and farm-at-school initiatives, agricultural technology (we’re talking robots!) and more, the farming industry is put under a microscope. “A Few Bright Agri“Bites” takes a look at three huge farming industries—poultry, soybeans and peanuts—and highlights growing facts, trivia and other interesting tidbits. Farm-to-school initiatives have been on the rise for nearly a decade, but a Wisconsin school district shares how it worked with 4-H students to create a flourishing program. Many K-12 districts partner with local farmers to supply their produce, but how well do you know these individuals? In the story, “Standing Out in Their Field,” eight men and women in differing industries, share their stories of American farming. That barely scrapes the surface in this 172-page jam-packed issue! Does tofu give you the heebie jeebies? Learn how to confidently prepare and cook tofu so even the fiercest of carnivores won’t miss the meat. The issue also shares tips on how to make the cafeteria a more welcoming place for those with anxiety, sensory disorders or autism spectrum disorder.
