Go Back to School With the Ethics Training You Need

It’s a plausible scenario that could happen anywhere: In a school district that is known for its tasty meals, a director decides to standardize the recipes. But, one manager had misgivings—what if the changes impact overall flavor and the young customers notice? Instead of complying with regulations, the manager makes tweaks to the recipes without prior approvals by the director. Broth is added to the taco meat to add more flavor. Extra cheese sauce is included in nacho portions because the servings feel lacking. And, the manager instructs the employees not to tell anyone—including the director. The situation does not sit well for one employee who isn’t sure how to handle it.

If you were in this scenario, what should you do and how should you reach that decision?

That’s the question posed during the new Ethics Course launched earlier this year by SNA. Through a self-paced module, users will be introduced to ethics and ethical behavior and will begin to learn how to make ethical decisions. The module includes a video case study and a real-life school nutrition-based case study that provides an opportunity for users to answer questions based on the scenario. Users are also introduced to the seven-step decision-making process that can be used when ethical dilemmas arise.

The goal is to teach ethical behavior to everyone in a school nutrition department, says Toni Aiken, Senior Manager of Professional Development at SNA, and help them “to identify ethical dilemmas and what to do when faced with one.”

“People need to understand ethical behavior and how it impacts a department,” she explains, “and back-to-school is a great time to complete the module.”

The Professional Development and Nutrition & Research Committees saw a need for an ethics-based module. Working together, they developed a long list of real-life scenarios, says Aiken. Since the module’s January launch, over 450 users—from employee to district level—have completed the module. Completion of the module earns a one-hour CEU credit, and the individual member cost of the course is $15. There are also packages available for Districts and State Agencies.

Live ethics discussions have often occurred at recent Annual National Conferences and School Nutrition Industry Conferences. During the live trainings, Aiken loves the interaction and discussions with attendees. That is “always the most fun,” she reveals.
