Wendy Patrick
SNIC Speaker and Business Ethics Guru

Give us a sneak peek about what you have planned for your conference session! How will your talk benefit attendees in their day-to-day?
From the boardroom to the bedroom, ethics has become an all–consuming staple of modern life. Modern ethical disputes include fighting over ownership from everything from intellectual property to fertilized eggs. This contemporary emphasis on ethics is apparent in the day-to-day operations of the attendees—whether they realize it or not. I will bring business ethics theories and concepts alive through practical examples and illustrations, which will facilitate attendees being able to identify current ethical dilemmas as well as the ethical theories they use to problem solve on and off the job. As a follow up to the broad perspective my talk will provide, school nutrition consultant, Barry Sackin, will then review the prescriptive regulations which govern procurement for school foodservice, so attendees gain an understanding of the rules that help buyers avoid costly pitfalls.

In your opinion, what are the most important trends and issues impacting business ethics?
We live in a culture that is sliding toward zero tolerance of ethical violations of any type. This trending reality is having a significant impact on corporate culture where the tone at the top and the proliferation of “unwritten rules” can no longer carry the day. Consumer trust is integral to maintain a competitive edge in modern business culture, and bad business press within our social media savvy world has an immediate impact.

Describe a little bit about your background.
Although I am a prosecutor by day, for the last two decades, the field of ethical decision making has defined the course of my career. I am a past Chair and Advisor of the California State Bar Ethics Committee (Committee on Professional Responsibility and Conduct), and past Chair of the San Diego County Bar Association’s (SDCBA) Legal Ethics Committee where I served a six-year term. I am widely published in the field of ethics, had my own ethics column in the San Diego Daily Transcript for more than a decade, and teach ethics nationally on a regular basis.

At San Diego State University I teach upper division business ethics in the Management Department of the College of Business Administration, both locally and abroad. In the last two years in addition to teaching regularly at the San Diego campus, I taught ethics classes in Barcelona, Spain, and Prague, Czech Republic.

What are you most excited about for the conference?
The chance to share the practical aspects of business ethics in today´s world and how the issues and concepts involved impact daily decision making—professionally as well as personally. I am eager to discuss how the public perception of business ethics is changing the way we do business in every aspect of our daily lives.
