USDA Releases Extension Notice for Whole-Grain Rich Exemptions for SY 2016-17

On April 29, 2016, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a memorandum (memo code SP33-2016) to regional directors and state directors, which supersedes the earlier whole grain exemption memo (SP 20-2015). All temporary flexibilities approved by a state agency under this superseded memo may continue through the school year 2016-17, at the discretion of the state agency. This memo serves to reissue the previous guidance intended to help state agencies establish their own processes to evaluate and respond to whole grain exemption requests from interested school food authorities (SFAs) for one additional school year.
