It’s a wrap! ANC 2016 may be in the books, but it will not soon be forgotten. Over the four-day conference 7,000 attendees took part in learning and networking opportunities that left them energized and prepared to succeed in school nutrition.

On Tuesday, chef and television personality, Carla Hall, captivated the audience with her infectious personality and Southern charm during the Second General Session. A self-described “recovering caterer,” Hall delighted the audience with her tale from family cook to co-host of ABC’s “The Chew,” noting, “You all know what an honor it is to feed someone. To feed their energy, their smiles and their soul.” Her “six-word-novel” of life lessons is “Say YES! Adventure follows, then growth.”

During Wednesday’s exciting Closing General Session, the 2016-17 SNA Board of Directors, including new President Becky Domokos-Bays, PhD, RD, SNS, were installed. Domokos-Bays relayed to conference attendees, “Most of you are here at ANC for professional growth and development, and that’s a gift for yourself, and the students you serve. I believe that my own leadership ability, as well as the opportunity to serve SNA, has been a gift in my life.”

Keynote speaker, broadcast journalist, television host and San Antonio native, John Quiñones, shared amusing anecdotes about his childhood and early career and offered some wisdom passed on to him by legendary newsman Peter Jennings: “Don’t worry about talking to the movers and the shakers of the world. Talk to the moved and shaken.” An excerpt from his popular “What Would You Do?” TV show featured individuals rising to support a hungry homeless man and left many audience members in grateful tears.

John Quiñones gave a touching and inspiring speech at the ANC Closing General Session.

Conference-goers packed in additional education sessions throughout the conference to bolster their work toward Professional Standards requirements and traveled the Exhibit Hall floor to meet with exhibitors, sample delicious food and beverage selections and gather product information to take home to their districts.

Additionally, attendees perused the posters displayed at ANC’s 26th Annual School Nutrition Research & Best Practices Showcase and networked with the authors. Each year, the Showcase features posters of successful practices and research in school nutrition. Winners were named in two categories:

  • Research: Evaluation of the Team Up for School Nutrition Success Workshop. Karen W. Cullen, DrPH, RD and Keith Rushing, PhD, RD; Institute of Child Nutrition, Applied Research Division, University of Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS.
  • Best Practices: All Aboard the Nutrition Express and Cruisin’ Cafe. Jennifer Harper McDermott, MS, RD; Chesapeake Public Schools, Chesapeake, VA.

The last evening of ANC was filled with music, dancing and lots of fun when attendees dressed in their retro-best took a step back in time to the Sixties and Seventies at the Final Event concert. Musical group Rain: A Tribute to the Beatles, took the crowd on a lyrical journey with a note-for-note theatrical event that was the next best thing to the most popular and influential act of the rock era.

This memorable event was a perfect conclusion to a successful conference—where school nutrition professionals came together in fellowship and camaraderie to Learn. Lead. Succeed.
