Who Deserves a Little FAME?

Do you know of a school nutrition leader or innovator who deserves to be nominated for a national Foodservice Achievement Management Excellence (FAME) Award? Although back-to-school season is a very busy time for school nutrition professionals, set yourself a “New (School) Year’s Resolution” to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of colleagues in your district, state or even across the country. (Or work with your supervisor on your own nomination!) Celebrating achievement helps to inspire everyone at this critical time for school nutrition programs. The deadline for nominations is October 8, 2014.

For more than 25 years, the FAME Awards have recognized those who raise the school nutrition bar for others to follow. These are individuals who have triumphed over challenges and provided insightful and innovative solutions to the complex issues that are the hallmark of this business. If this describes you, your supervisor or a colleague, take the time to submit your nomination this month.

The categories are:

  • Golden Star Director of School Nutrition Award (bestowed on a director with more than 12 years of director experience)
  • Leadership Award (given to a director with 12 or fewer years of experience)
  • Spirit Award (for an individual in a management position such as an assistant director or coordinator)
  • Rising Star Award (for a director with 5 or fewer years of director experience)
  • Special Achievement Award (for a director of a program with 10,000 or fewer enrollment)
  • Friend of Child Nutrition Award (for advocates who support school nutrition beyond the scope of their normal professional duties; child nutrition directors and department heads are not eligible)

Winning a FAME award is a tremendous honor, but being nominated is worthwhile, as well. The nominations for this and other school nutrition awards programs often are used as leads and resources by School Nutrition, the flagship publication of SNA, and other foodservice media to showcase the profession’s best practices and creative strategies. Participation in the FAME Awards program gives you the chance to shine the spotlight on your district and help spread the word about the important role that school nutrition professionals play in contributing to the health and welfare of America’s children.

The FAME Awards program is sponsored by Basic American Foods, Schwan’s Food Service, Inc., and Tyson Foods, Inc. The awards ceremony will take place in conjunction with SNA’s School Nutrition Industry Conference in Phoenix, Ariz., in January 2015.

Nominations will be taken online or via a downloadable form at www.fameawards.net until October 8, 2014. Most award categories require nominees to be SNA members in good standing. Other competition rules and details are also available at www.fameawards.net. Make sure FAME doesn’t pass you by! Send your nomination in before this year’s deadline.
