STEPS Challenge: New Year, Clean Slate

2015-01-05

Are you ready for a new year, and with it an opportunity for a fresh outlook on life? While some may dismiss the annual ritual of New Year’s resolutions, the concept of striving to make improvements in your life is always a good thing.

A new year brings a clean slate, a blank page of sorts to begin anew. Use that clean slate to start a food journal! January’s STEPS Challenge encourages you to keep track of your eating habits. A food journal is an effective way to not only ensure you are paying attention and being honest about what you eat, but how different foods make you feel. It will spotlight the food types you may be missing and help you to plan basic meals and snacks in order to create a more balanced diet.

To journal, you might use an app on your smartphone or a simple notebook where you jot down the information. The style of journal isn’t what’s important—it’s the commitment to look at your eating habits, so you can make better decisions and healthy changes.

You’ll earn two points for each day you successfully record all that you ate via a food journal, and when you reach 50 points you will be eligible for the monthly prize: an iPod Shuffle! To learn more about the STEPS Challenge, visit www.schoolnutrition.org/STEPS.
