June 12, 2015—This summer, School Nutrition explores the present and future of school foodservice by taking a look at the people and conditions shaping the K-12 field, whether it’s the children who aspire to work behind the serving lines someday to the environmental facets that affect the profession.

But, first, Ruby Reader returns for her third year of hiding in the pages of School Nutrition. Take care to closely analyze (and read!) the articles and advertisements in this issue and find the 20 miniscule Ruby Readers hiding within—not counting pages 10 and 11! When you find all 20 Rubies, write them down on the form on page 11 and fax it to (301) 686-3115; email a scanned copy to; or visit to fill out the online entry form. The deadline is July 7, 2015. Additionally, you can drop your completed entry off at the School Nutrition booth in the Annual National Conference Exhibit Hall in Salt Lake City. The SN booth is in the 2200 aisle across from Produce Pavilion. The deadline is Tuesday, July 14, 2015, by 2 p.m.

Next, School Nutrition visits an item of utmost importance: the governance of the Association. In “ For the People, By the People,” the executive leadership team details the proposed changes to SNA’s governance structure that will be voted on at the House of Delegates at the Annual National Conference (ANC) in Salt Lake City in July. Because this affects so many Association members, take the time to review all the proposed changes.

Also in this issue, check out the marketing genius of the director of Child Nutrition at Lakota Local Schools, Liberty Township, Ohio. Chris Burkhardt has eliminated paper menus in favor of printing a QR code on magnets that can be sent home with students. If you don’t know what a QR code is, don’t miss this article by writer Karly Kolaja, “ Cracking the QR Code.”

Now, for the crux of this issue: A look at school nutrition, today and tomorrow. First, Editor Patricia L. Fitzgerald in “ Staying Power” talks to veteran directors who, for various reasons, can’t imagine retiring from the industry.

Fitzgerald also takes a look at what makes a good leader, in “ Bloom Where You Are Planted,” including an overview of SNA’s Future Leader’s Program. This program cultivates the Association’s leaders of tomorrow and is vital to the success and future of SNA.

Many of these leaders come from the state chapters. In “ Power Up Your SNA Chapter,” SNA’s State Affiliate Relations Manager Sara Sanders offers up tips and ideas for refreshing meetings. The article also includes important information about staying fiscally sustainable.

The future of the Association also comes from interns—have you invited an intern to work in your department? This is a relationship can be mutually beneficial, and some veteran operators give their advice for making an intern program successful in Arianne Corbett’s “ Intern Today, Director Tomorrow.”

But what about the future school nutrition professionals that even younger? In “ When I Grow Up…” Susan Davis Gryder interviews four youngsters, ranging from age 7 to 15, who have a passion for health and food that just might turn into a love for school nutrition. 

Concluding this series is Managing Editor Kelsey Casselbury’s “ Weights & Measures 2.0.” Twenty years ago, now-CEO Patricia Montague, CAE, wrote an environmental scan of the school nutrition profession, noting all the factors that might affect operations. This included population growth, family income and increasing immigration. This year, Casselbury updates this article by comparing the numbers from then and now for an informative, interesting look at how the world around us has changed in the past two decades.

It’s almost ANC time! In “ Westward, Ho!” Associate Editor Heidi Funkhouser outlines what to expect at the conference in Salt Lake City, including a full list of exhibitors, while Communications Coordinator Shannon Goff in “ Salt Lake City Sights and Sounds” shares some of the places you don’t want to miss on your trip west.

Finally, are you hungry? You will be after reading Dayle Hayes’ “ BBQ, Past, Present and Future.” She talks to a myriad foodservice operators who are pulling, smoking and grilling meats to serve to students—to great success.
