SNA Requests USDA Guidance on Whole Grains Exemption

2015-01-16

On January 15, 2015, Julia Bauscher, SNS, SNA President, and Patti Montague, CAE, SNA CEO, sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Secretary requesting prompt action to issue guidance for state agencies wishing to grant exemptions for school food authorities (SFA’s) struggling to meet the July 2014 whole grain mandates under the new nutrition standards.

SNA has heard from members who are eager to apply for this exemption, but whose state agencies are awaiting guidance from USDA. The letter urged USDA to take prompt action to assist state agencies in establishing an exemption process as mandated in the FY2015 Consolidated Appropriations bill.
