SNA Provides Comments to USDA on Unpaid Meal Charges

Yesterday, SNA submitted comments to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on the request in the Federal Register seeking information on how schools and state agencies address the issue of unpaid meal charges. Section 143 of the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (HHFKA) requires FNS—in conjunction with states and participating local educational agencies (LEAs)—to examine and report on the current policies and practices of state agencies and LEAs regarding extending credit to children by allowing them to “charge” the cost of school meals on the day of service. SNA sought feedback from the membership through news stories and e-blasts then consolidated responses into the official SNA response. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback!
