School Meals Procurement: Updates on Avian Flu


School meal programs recently struggled with the poultry and eggshortages, and accompanying price increases, due to the recent Avian Fluoutbreak.  Many providers to school meal programs saw a significantdecrease in flocks and had to cease production, which in turn impacted schoolmenus across the country. However,  recent reports  indicate the worst is over and the Chief Veterinary Officer for the USDA expects to see a continued decrease in cases during the summer months.  SNA will continue to track the situation and  keep our Members updated on this critical situation.

July 22 Update:  AgricultureSecretary Vilsack announced on July 22 that he has formed a special task forceto prepare for any possible return of the bird flu.  USDA has also hiredan additional 3,200 people to help combat the disease that impacted food pricesand school food procurement earlier this year.  

August 14 Update: On July 29, Secretary Vilsack gave aspeech at an Avian Flu Outbreak Conference on current USDA efforts to preventfurther outbreaks, as well as steps being taken to respond should another wavehit the United States. To read the speech, please  click here .

September 18 Update: On September 17, Chairman Pat Roberts(R-KS) and Ranking Member Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) of the Senate AgricultureCommittee sent a letter to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack requesting moreinformation on the agency’s plans to handle any future Avian Flu outbreak.
