“The School Food Modernization Act” Aims to Provide Grants for New Kitchen Equipment

April 9, 2014 - Senators Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) and Susan Collings (R-MN) introduced legislation that would provide assistance in securing grants and loans to fund the purchase of new school kitchen equipment and infrastructure improvements. The bill, H.2210, was introduced following the Pew Charitable Trusts’ finding that 88 percent of school districts are in need of at least one piece of new kitchen equipment. If passed, it would allow school administrators to fund small renovation projects. It would also establish a loan-assistance program with the USDA that would allow access to money for larger-scale projects. Lastly, the legislation seeks to strengthen training and offer technical help to school food-service employees. A bipartisan House version of this legislation, H.R. 1783, was introduced by Representatives Tom Latham (R–IA) and Mike McIntyre (D–NC) in 2013.
