Healthy Meals for Kids are Trendy!


Did you know that healthful kids’ meals and child nutrition are among the top trends for 2014?

While serving healthy meals to kids is nothing new to school nutrition programs, it is now trendy, too! According to the National Restaurant Association’s annual findings, What’s Hot 2014 Culinary Forecast, healthful kids’ meals and child nutrition are among the top trends for 2014. Within kids’ meals, whole grain items, fruit/vegetable side items, ethnic inspired dishes and oven-baked items (e.g. baked chicken fingers) were also among the top trends. And each of these trends is a regular part of school meals. Additionally, local sourcing of foods was ranked a top overall trend, and according to SNA’s School Nutrition Operations Report: The State of School Nutrition 2014 , 37% of school nutrition programs have farm-to-school initiatives and 35% have school gardens.
