Four Weeks and Counting… Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, December 1st

2015-11-05

What event will the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF) be celebrating in less than four weeks? Here’s a hint: it’s not Black Friday or Cyber Monday, the two events following Thanksgiving that are all about getting deals. It’s Giving Tuesday, of course! While Black Friday and Cyber Monday are great for marking the start of the holiday shopping season, Giving Tuesday has a more meaningful purpose. It’s a global day dedicated to giving back, much like how the Foundation is all about giving back by providing education, research and scholarships for SNA members.

On Tuesday, December 1, 2015, non-profit organizations, businesses, community centers, families, individuals and students around the world will come together for a common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give.

Here are four key elements of Giving Tuesday that make the day fun and exciting:

  1. Social media is a big component of #GivingTuesday. The word about Giving Tuesday is spread through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
  2. Online giving is encouraged. More individuals are making philanthropic gifts online. Giving is easier online – one simple form to complete and no need for an envelope, an address, and a stamp.
  3. Peer-to-peer fundraising. SNA members asking SNA members and others with a passion for school nutrition to join them in contributing to the School Nutrition Foundation increases the numbers of donors.
  4. UNselfies. Photos of individuals proclaiming their support for the School Nutrition Foundation will be posted on the SNF Facebook and will be shared with friends and family to encourage them to make a gift.

Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the School Nutrition Foundation to tell the stories of the men and women who provide healthy meals to more than 30 million students every day. For many of those children, the breakfast and/or lunch they receive at school will be the healthiest meal they eat that day and, for many others, the meal may be the only one they eat that day. We want to celebrate the important role that the school nutrition professional plays in the life of the nation’s children.

To take part in this important event, all month long leading up to December 1st we encourage SNA members and others who support school nutrition to make a year-end contribution to the Foundation. The dollars contributed will help educate and empower the men and women who are dedicated to feeding school children each and every day.
