Four Weeks and Counting... Giving Tuesday is Tuesday, December 2, 2014

In just four weeks, we will celebrate the importance of philanthropic support in the world!

What follows Thanksgiving, the national holiday for giving thanks? Black Friday and Cyber Monday to launch the Christmas shopping season. And now... Giving Tuesday to launch year-end, holiday giving.

In 2012, a group of friends and partners, led by the 92nd Street Y (92Y) in New York, saw an opportunity to channel the generous spirit of the holiday season to inspire action around charitable giving. #GivingTuesday became the catalyst to find ways to promote and celebrate the great American tradition of giving.

#GivingTuesday is about philanthropy and making the world a better place. The celebration is global and is dedicated to giving back. On that day, non-profit organizations, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world will come together for a common purpose: To celebrate generosity and to give.

Four key elements of Giving Tuesday make the day exciting and fun!

  1. Social media is a big component of #GivingTuesday. The word about Giving Tuesday is spread through Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms.
  2. Online giving is encouraged. More individuals are making philanthropic gifts online. Giving is easier online – one simple form to complete and no need for an envelope, an address, and a stamp.
  3. Peer-to-peer fundraising. SNA members asking SNA members and others with a passion for school nutrition to join them in contributing to the School Nutrition Foundation increases the numbers of donors.
  4. Unselfies. Photos of individuals proclaiming their support for the School Nutrition Foundation will be posted on the SNF Facebook and will be shared with friends and family to encourage them to make a gift.

Giving Tuesday is an opportunity for the School Nutrition Foundation to tell the stories of the men and women who provide healthy meals to more than 30 million students every day. For many of those children, the breakfast and/or lunch they receive at school will be the healthiest meals they eat that day and for many, the meals at school may be the only meals they eat that day. We want to celebrate the important role that the school nutrition professional plays in the life of the nation’s children.

We want to encourage SNA members and others who support school nutrition to make contributions to provide education, research, and scholarships for SNA members. The dollars contributed to the Foundation will help educate and empower the men and women who are dedicated to feeding school children each and every day.
