Census Says: Farm to School is Booming!

2016-03-24

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) released new data from its 2015 Farm to School Census. Records indicated that farm to school is on the rise! Two thousand school districts anticipate that they will implement the program to their district in the future. Currently, 5,254 school districts nationwide participate in farm-to-school activities, including serving local food in the cafeteria, taste tests on new foods, and introducing students to local farms. The program allows schools to purchase produce from local farms, contributing to the now lower school meal program costs. School nutrition directors nationwide describe seeing an increase in support of the current standards and an increase in participation in school cafeterias.
