An Evening to Remember: Order Your Tickets for the Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes

Are you attending the upcoming Legislative Action Conference (LAC) in Washington, D.C.? If so, time is running out to order your tickets to attend the School Nutrition Foundation’s third annual Celebration of School Nutrition Heroes. On Monday, February 29, gather with your colleagues to honor the 2016 School Nutrition Heroes, an honor bestowed upon school nutrition professionals who go above and beyond their daily responsibilities to make a difference in the lives of the children and the communities they serve.

The collective achievements of this year’s heroes are impressive. A very brief look reveals that Chris Burkhardt, SNS, secures grants to provide biometric screenings, flu shots and health assessments for all district staff. He also volunteers for a community-based organization that provides food, clothing, personal care and household items to low-income families. Sandra Hearn is a coach and cheerleader for Special Olympics and has taken her team to the national competition three times. She also serves on the board of a private school that teaches life skills to special needs children.

Jody Houston is a mentor to at-risk students and manages an employee wellness program that promotes good nutrition and increased exercise. Samantha Ingram works to raise awareness of childhood cancer and build support for Children’s Hospital of Alabama and its Ronald McDonald House. She also manages the Blessings in a Bag program that ensures students have snacks over the weekend. Suellen Smith maintains a donation closet stocked with outfits students can wear to the prom, homecoming or graduation. She also serves as a life coach and mentor to many of her teen customers.
