Action Alerts: What are They and Why do They Matter to You?

2014-04-23

“We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.” Thomas Jefferson

April 23, 2014 - You may have seen a lot of recent activity asking you to take action and contact your Members of Congress on behalf of SNA. This is an exciting time for everyone involved in school nutrition! New Meal patterns, Competitive Foods rules, and many more areas of school nutrition are under scrutiny by your government officials. Legislation that will impact your jobs on a daily basis is being formed right now. It is critical that you share your knowledge with your government officials so that the final implemented legislation supports your ability to provide healthy school meals to our nation’s children.

Congress is listening and they care about what you have to say. However, there will always be competing interests and time constraints that impact the attention span of Members and their staff. SNA is working to ensure we create the proper focus and context for your message. This is where Action Alerts come in. You will receive an Action Alert at a time we believe your voice will have optimal impact. It is important that you then follow through to get your message to your representative. We know you are busy, but taking a few moments to send a message helps to secure your future in school nutrition, and the future of the children who depend on school meals.

SNA members are some of the most active and passionate citizens and your advocacy efforts have been noticed. What else can you do? Stay tuned for future Action Alerts, contact your representative to invite them to your school, or visit them at their district offices to keep them informed of your daily successes and challenges. You have the power to make a difference.
