Lynn Harvey Named 2017-2018 President of the School Nutrition Association

ATLANTA, GA (July 12, 2017) — During its 71st Annual National Conference, the School Nutrition Association (SNA) installed Dr. Lynn Harvey, RDN, LDN, FAND, SNS, as president for the 2017-2018 school year. Dr. Harvey, Chief of School Nutrition Services for the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction since 2003, will represent SNA’s 57,000 school nutrition professional members nationwide.

Dr. Harvey is a Registered Dietitian, a Licensed Nutritionist and a Fellow of the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. As Chief of School Nutrition Services, she serves as the liaison between the NC Department of Public Instruction and the Food and Nutrition Service of the US Department of Agriculture. Dr. Harvey and her team collectively administer the 7th largest school nutrition program in the nation, providing school meals and snacks to over 1.5 million students daily. The division strives to make food, fitness and fun an integral part of student success.

Earlier in Dr. Harvey’s career, she worked as a pediatric nutritionist at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh, NC, as Nutrition Education and Training Coordinator at the NC Department of Public Instruction, and as an Extension Educator with the North Carolina State University Cooperative Extension Service. Dr. Harvey has extensive experience interpreting the science of nutrition into easy-to-understand strategies for a variety of audiences as a means of helping them take measures to promote good health while preventing chronic diseases. She penned a newspaper column and broadcast a weekly television news segment designed to help audiences learn to prepare more nutritious versions of their favorite recipes. Dr. Harvey was also a health and fitness consultant and reporter for WRAL–TV in Raleigh.

Dr. Harvey has served in various capacities as a member of SNA, including service to the Public Policy and Legislative Committee, the Education and Professional Development Committee, and the State Agency Committee, as well as the Nutrition Standards and Competitive Foods Task Forces, the Procurement Task Force and as Chair of the Procurement Ethics Task Force.

Dr. Harvey has a bachelor’s degree from Meredith College, a master’s degree from East Carolina University and her doctorate from North Carolina State University.
