SNA's 2017 Annual National Conference (ANC)

The following is the ninth in a series of news stories exploring the exciting opportunities and events at ANC.

An ANC tradition continues.

SNA once again, is literally rolling out the red carpet to recognize Association state presidents and honor state, regional and national award winners. The Annual Red Carpet Awards Ceremony at SNA’s Annual National Conference (ANC), gracefully exalts recipients of the Employee, Manager and Director of the Year, as well as State Association Membership and Professional Development Awards. SNA also salutes the Industry Member of the Year.

If you have never attended the Red Carpet Awards Ceremony, it is not something you want to miss.

“You can’t go wrong hanging out with the best of the best,” says ANC 2017 Program Chair Jeremy West, CDM, SNS and director of Operations, Food and Nutrition Services at JEFFCO Public Schools in Golden, Colorado. “These outstanding individuals have been chosen for their remarkable contribution to the profession and this is your opportunity to take the time to recognize them. It lets you know that you are part of a larger family.

“I think it is really cool to hear people’s stories and put a name to the face. It’s a great event and I would suggest your attendance because this is chance to support those extraordinary individuals from your state.”

While the award ceremony takes place inside, much of the excitement takes place outside with state directors and award winners walking down the red carpet, greeted by members of the SNA Board of Directors and have their picture taken, in celebrity fashion.

“They feel like they are stars,” exclaimed SNA Midwest Region Director, Lori Danella, SNS, assistant director at Lee’s Summit R-VII School District in Summit, Missouri. “The national award winners all receive flowers and a beautiful framed certificate, and the state presidents all received a marvelous plaque. It’s a really wonderful spotlight for the honorees, because they get their pictures taken with our SNA President Becky Domokos-Bays, and you can just tell how proud they are.

“It’s just awesome to see because they all deserve to be recognized. We all do the same thing and have the same passion; to feed kids and make sure they are eating a healthy and nutritious meal. So, it’s good to recognize and be a cheerleader for each other.”

Danella feels that the awards are a testament to the hard work and professionalism SNA members show at their job, each and every day.

“Sometimes people in our [foodservice] profession don’t get the kind of recognition that principals and superintendents get,” notes Danella. “So, receiving these awards show people in our home district, how hard we work and it creates a powerful message. We are successful and actually everything everybody does has a significant impact on all of our peers.”

The Ceremony is also a place to recognize the incredible dedication of outgoing state presidents.

“They work really hard being state president,” stressed Danella. “Many people don’t know how many hours that they put in, the fires that they put out, and organizing their state conferences, etc., I think this is a good time to make them feel valued and motivate them and other future presidents to continue on.”

She concludes, “If you have never been to the Red Carpet Award Ceremony, take the time to come and see what it is all about. It an inspiring experience that you not soon forget.”
