The following is the first in a series of news stories exploring the exciting events at ANC.

You may be interested to know that the largest and busiest drive-in restaurant in the world is located in downtown Atlanta. The Varsity restaurant, which accommodates 600 cars outside and more than 800 people inside, serves two-miles worth of hot dogs, 2,500 pounds of potatoes, 5,000 fired pies and 300 gallons of homemade chili to over 15,000 customers every day! Atlanta is also the site of SNA’s Annual National Conference (ANC) and the Association is serving up an equally large and delicious menu of events. ANC will feature over 120 education sessions, 12 pre-conference workshops, five special targeted learning sessions, 400-plus Exhibit Hall vendors, more than two dozen informative posters at the School Nutrition Research and Best Practices Showcase highlighting new ideas and techniques and plenty of networking opportunities. Not to mention, an Opening General Session featuring NASA Astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly, a Closing General Session underscored by inspirational speaker Alex Sheen, a concert punctuated by a knockout performance by Barenaked Ladies and much more.

“ANC is all about investing in ourselves,” explained ANC 2017 Program Chair Jeremy West, CDM, SNS, director of Operations, Food and Nutrition Services at JEFFCO Public Schools in Golden, Colorado. “I know for those people paying on their own, the cost of registration, hotel and travel can be significant. And you are probably asking yourselves, why am I putting out all this money when I could be taking a vacation or doing something with my family. But what you are getting with your ANC investment return is personal and professional growth.”

West who has attended the past 10 ANCs, said that going to the education sessions though the years, has helped his professional growth by learning the “latest and greatest” in school nutrition, which has given him new ideas that he has integrated back in his school district. Making a point to attend ANC also helped him personally through networking opportunities.
