Join the Fight to Reduce Food Waste: 2016-17 SCrAP Participants Receive Awards

Join the School Nutrition Foundation in the Fight to Reduce Food Waste

Thank you to everyone who participated in the School Cafeteria Discards Assessment Project, called SCrAP, during the 2016-17 school year. The project is a collaboration between the School Nutrition Foundation (SNF), the Environment Research and Education Foundation (EREF), the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Keep America Beautiful.

The program involved 93 schools with over 82,000 students. The policies, practices, and waste quantities were documented in 38 states.

Three levels of participation were available. Those at the purple level completed a questionnaire. At the blue level, in addition to the questionnaire, the school weighed cafeteria waste 3-5 times. At the gold level, the schools completed the questionnaire and weighed lunch discards 6 or more times.

Debra Kantner, EREF’s Data & Policy Program Manager, made the announcement of the award recipients as determined in a random drawing at 12:00 pm on Friday, September 15. Selected in the drawing from blue and gold schools respectively, cash awards were given to one blue school and to two gold schools. The winning blue school, which received $750, was Wolcott Elementary School in Wolcott, Vermont. The winning gold schools, each of which received $1,500, were Longfellow Elementary School in Boise, Idaho and Waters School in Chicago, Illinois.

All data provided will be incredibly useful to better understand waste management practices in schools and find ways to maximize efficiency and sustainability. Each participating school will receive snapshot reports summarizing the study results with links to curriculum and sustainability resources.

The SCrAP project will continue in 2017-18 and schools can register today. For more information about the SCrAP project, visit the EREF website.
