These 60-minute interactive discussions are designed as think-tank sessions where you can brainstorm, share challenges and successes and takeaway applicable skills that you can implement at work! Space is limited to 100 participants and is filled on a first-come, first served basis. Session highlights include:


Community Eligibility Provision—How it Worked in My District
Are you considering starting the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP)? In this session, an overview of CEP will be provided together with explanations of what worked (and what didn’t) when districts began CEP. Share best practices in working with Title I, gathering Identified Student Percentage (ISP) data, determining what’s best (school, district-wide or a group of schools) and providing outreach data to the State.

RECALL! PR Crisis Management for CN Programs
Word spreads of a national recall at a large meat packing plant, and Jamie Oliver makes a big splash targeting school meals. “Pink Slime” enters the national conversation. When these PR crises materialized, how did your office respond? This education opportunity uses examples from recent history to create a template for PR crisis management that will assist school nutrition professionals the next time there is a crisis. And there will be a next time!

Harvesting Best Practices from the School Garden
Does your school have a garden? Are you thinking of starting a school garden? School gardens have successfully contributed to meeting the new meal pattern. They have also been used as a nutrition education tool and can serve as a marketing tool for your meal programs. Join this training program for ideas to connect your school gardens to school meals and take home a school garden food safety checklist.

Makin’ Nutrition What You’re Dishin’
In this interactive training session, participants will be introduced to the idea of how to write a “target menu.” The presentation will include examples and interactive small group exercises. Discussions will focus on the art of healthy eating messages, and you’ll discover effective ways to encourage students and staff to choose healthy options first.

Build the Next Generation of School Nutrition Professionals
Build the next generation of school nutrition professionals by developing collaborations between school nutrition programs and universities. Learn about partnerships with university dietetic internships and SNA’s School Nutrition Specialist (SNS) internship program. This session will walk you through the process from setting up an internship program to measuring the success of your efforts.

Maximizing USDA Foods in Your Supper and Summer Meal Programs
Join us to discuss how to successfully maximize your program entitlements and utilize USDA Foods to enhance your summer and supper meals programs.

Schools: Nutrition Hubs for Children
Hear how your school can be a nutrition hub while effectively implementing federal meals programs. Discussions will focus on strategies for executing and promoting alternative breakfast models, and school-based summer and afterschool meals programs, as well as the successes and challenges when implementing these programs. Bring your questions to discuss real, tangible next steps that can be taken to feed more meals to more kids in schools.

Outspoken Advocate Groups: Friend or Foe?
Does this sound familiar? Engaged parents view a questionable food documentary and become passionate about changing school food. They form a group and approach district officials with a determined “failure is not an option” attitude. We’ve all been there, right? Rather than battle the enemy, Park City (Utah) School District embraced its determined efforts. Join us to discover that with lots of education and communication, a nutrition program can leverage outspoken parents into your raving fans!
